Doctors Setting New Standards in Pain Care
Nerve Blocks
A nerve block is a procedure where a local anesthetic is injected close to a nerve or joint. The benefits of nerve blocks tend to be temporary. Some patients experience pain relief for a short period of time; and others can experience pain relief for many weeks. A patient’s specific pain condition will determine how many injections will be required. You will be awake during the nerve blocks and most procedures are well tolerated and brief. Generally, the procedure only lasts 5 to 15 minutes. it’s possible that your first injection will take away some of the pain, but that other injections will offer more improvement.
Radiofrequency Neurolysis (RFN)
Radiofrequency Neurolysis (RFN) is a minimally invasive procedure used to reduce chronic pain. During the procedure, radio waves are delivered through a precisely placed needle to heat a small area of the nerve, disrupting its ability to send pain signals to the brain. This can provide long-lasting relief, often for several months or even years. RFN can be performed in different areas depending on the source of pain: cervical RFN targets nerves in the neck, lumbar RFN targets nerves in the lower back, thoracic RFN targets nerves in the upper to mid-back, and sacroiliac (SI) joint RFN targets nerves in the lower back and pelvic region.
Epidural Injections
An epidural injection is administered into the epidural space, which runs along the spine and surrounds the spinal nerves. It contains a combination of a local anesthetic and an anti-inflammatory steroid to help reduce pain and inflammation caused by spinal conditions or injury. This treatment is commonly used to relieve radiating pain, such as pain that travels down the legs. Patients may experience relief lasting from 6 weeks to 6 months, depending on their individual condition and response to the injection.
Medical Branch Blocks (MBB)
A medial branch block is a procedure in which a small amount of local anesthetic is injected near the medial branch nerves in the spine. These nerves carry pain signals from the facet joints, and temporarily blocking them can help reduce pain and determine whether they are the source of discomfort. This procedure can be performed in different areas of the spine depending on the location of pain: cervical medial branch blocks target nerves responsible for neck pain, thoracic medial branch blocks target nerves in the upper to mid-back, and lumbar medial branch blocks target nerves in the lower back.
Trigger Point Injections
A trigger point is a well-localized tender area or a center of a muscle spasm, usually near the insertion of a muscle or ligament or near a joint. It frequently presents as obvious bump, often occurring in the upper back and/or shoulder areas. When trigger point pain is non-responsive to conservative measures, injection with local anesthetic, with or without added steroid, may be helpful to relieve pain and tension.
BOTOX® – Chronic Headaches
BOTOX® is the first FDA-approved preventive treatment for Chronic Migraine. Unlike acute treatments, which are taken to treat a headache or migraine once it has already begun, BOTOX® prevents migraines and headaches before they even start. BOTOX® treatment is injected by a healthcare provider, one who is experienced in treating Chronic Migraine with BOTOX®
Chiropractic Therapy
Chiropractic treatment consists of adjustment and manipulation of the spine and extremities. Some chiropractors supplement their treatments with physical therapy, acupuncture and nutritional support. Conditions possibly benefited by chiropractic arthritis, pain in neck, shoulder, back, arms, legs, pain described as ‘pins and needles and numbness, sports injuries, whiplash, migraine, sprains, strains, insomnia, nerve entrapment, muscle cramps, stiffness, occupational injuries, and lumbar disk degeneration.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been a technique to reduce pain that has been used for over 200 years. It involves the insertion of very fine needles at key points on the body to achieve pain reduction. In some parts of the world, acupuncture has been used to treat surgical pain. Commonly acupuncture is used for treatment of insomnia, depression, smoking, and weight gain. In chronic pain acupuncture is often an effective adjunct to pain relief.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is a focused, short-term form of psychotherapy. It helps people to develop skills and strategies for becoming and staying healthy.
CBT focuses on problems of everyday life. CBT in chronic pain has been shown to reduce pain by helping individuals link pain to daily activities and help them regulate their activities and their cognitive response. It’s an effective way of focussing on the “here and now”. CBT allows pain suffers to make sense of what is happening around them and how their perceptions affect their feelings and their pain.
Key components of CBT:
- is structured
- is time-limited (usually 6-20 sessions)
- is problem-focused and goal-oriented
- teaches strategies and skills
- is based on a proactive, shared therapeutic relationship between therapist and client
